We put a lot of faith in the seaside. It blows away the cobwebs. We get away from it all. Fresh air does us good. Southwold seems like the perfect spot.
The north sea pushes us back on the shore, and the shore sits beneath mansions, pubs and holiday homes. #Southwoldpier extends its limbs proudly into the water. Restored and reinvented, its under the pier show is a triumph of British sarcasm and self-deprecation.
Its beach huts and lighthouse are iconic. Adnams brewery ensures no one goes thirsty and that most afternoons a hoppy fragrance fills the air.
George Orwell stayed in Southwold off and on throughout his life, stopping at his family home when times were tough. He fell in love, wrote, swam in that north sea and worked on his father's allotment. He is celebrated in a mural on the pier. It is currently being restored. I am not surprised Orwell came back here time and again. I am wishing that I had a Southwold to call home. A place to come and be restored, find my feet and get ready for what life offers next.
Instead, I am a visitor. And with a visitor's eye, I look for the joy. This is what I found.
